However, under normal circumstances, we only feel joy or sadness based on what is happening at that moment, provided we pay attention to it. In early ice hand experiments, the combination of process neglect and the peak-end rule led people to make seemingly absurd choices. Why do people choose to endure unnecessary suffering? The only standard for judging whether a person is rational is not whether their beliefs or preferences are reasonable, but whether they are consistent.
